The American Legion Auxiliary is the world's largest women's patriotic service organization. Through its nearly 10,500 Units located in every state and some foreign countries, the Auxiliary embodies the spirit of America that has prevailed through war and peace. Along with the American Legion, it solidly stands behind America and her ideals.
- To support the American Legion programs for veterans, young people and community
- To provide for today's needs while being advocates for a bright future.
- To advance the understanding of patriotism and responsibility of citizenship.
- To promote individual integrity and family values.
- To ensure as volunteers, that Auxiliary members continue to be leaders in all that is good in this nation today, tomorrow and for generations to come through serving others first and not self.

Unit 191 American Legion Auxiliary Announces 2007 Americanism Essay Content Winners The Auxiliary's Americanism program promotes patriotism and responsible citizenship and strives to uphold and promote American ideals and the principles of democracy.
Each year the American Legion Auxiliary sponsors an Americanism Essay Contest for local students in 3rd-8th grade as part of their Americanism Program.
This year's essay theme was "I'm Proud to be an American." Judges recruited from Ft Detrick, MD were kept very busy reading all of the entries from 3rd grade to 8th grade. The top winners in each grade category were recently announced:
3rd-4th Grade:
First Place: Walt Stone, Twin Ridge Elementary
Second Place: Tessa Lyons, Twin Ridge Elementary
Third Place: Jonah Ferber, Twin Ridge Elementary
5th-6th Grade:
First Place: Mai Zaru, Mt Airy Elementary
Second Place: John McAninley, Mt Airy Elementary
Third Place: Laura Dytrt, Mt Airy Elementary
7th-8th Grade:
Matt Bahnsen, Mt Airy Middle
Morgan Carpenter, Mt Airy Middle
Emily King, Mt Airy Middle
First place winners in each grade category have advanced to the American Legion Auxiliary Western Maryland District level for competition. If students place first at the District level, they will advance to the state level for judging.
